Senior
DISCOUNT DAY

Senior Discount Day

Senior discount day!

A lot of stores have them, but, we often don’t know about them unless we ask.

Our local Walgreen’s Senior Discount Day is the one we use most. It's the first Tuesday of every month. We get everything we can there. Toothpaste, lip balm, soaps, shampoos, band aids, beauty products….. ALL 20% off!

And, you're going to be surprised how many stores have a Senior Discount Day!

Sometimes
You Have to Ask!

Many stores don’t have advertised senior discount days. BUT, even many of these stores will give you at least a small discount if you ask.

Now, if you’re buying a hair brush at the dollar store for $1, you may save a nickel.

BUT, if you are buying an expensive hearing aid for $2,500 or $3,000, just a 5% savings comes out to $150. 10%, $300. 20%, $600! That a nice handful of savings for taking ten seconds to ask, “Do you have a senior citizen discount?” Right?

The same holds true for furniture, clothing, and more.

When Are
Senior Discount Days?

Different stores have different days for senior discounts. The most popular days seem to be Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Some are on Mondays.

So, call the stores you are shopping in and find out when and if they have a Senior Discount Day.

It’s not tricky. All you have to do is ask whomever answers the phone: “Hello. Can you tell me please, do you have a senior discount day?”

It’s that simple!

Retail Stores
with a
Seniors Discount Day

Here are some of the major retail stores that offer a senior discount day:

Amazon: Our AARP membership comes in real handy here. We can save 50% on certain Kindle e-books, 10% on Kindle e-readers, and 10% on audio and print books. Nice for us readers!

Banana Republic: 10% off. Just because we’re seniors! (And, magnificent!)

Bealls Outlet: Every Tuesday, 15% off. Tuesdays and Wednesdays seem to be especially good for us in many places.

Big Lots: You may need a discount card here, or a discount program.

Goodwill: Goodwill is one of the best known places for discounts. Not only is everything in these stores a great buy already, each location picks it’s own senior day for another 10% - 20% off the already low prices. So, just call them up to find out when theirs is.

Home Depot: Home Depot, unfortunately, does not offer specific senior discounts. However, it will price match the sales and discounts of other retail stores. This is real handy if you love going to Home Depot and the sale you saw is somewhere else. Even an ad in the newspaper.

Joann Fabrics: You only have to be 55 to cash in on Joann Fabrics Senior Discount Day. It’s 20% off of the total purchases! The Senior Discount Day varies by location, so be sure to call before you go.

Kmart: A limited number of these stores stores still offer a Senior Discount Day. It’s Wednesday. 40% off! Yes, forty percent!

Kohl's: Another great Wednesday place to go. Kohl’s offers senior discounts every Wednesday. Up to 15% off. AND: You can combine this with coupon discounts for even greater savings.

Lowe's: 10% off for seniors who are veterans on eligible purchases.

Marshall's: I love Marshall’s. Great stuff at GREAT prices. Not much on the senior discount scene. BUT, we include Marshall’s for their always low prices. Limited discounts for us here. Special offers may be available at various locations. Call to check.

Rite Aid: 10% off at Rite Aid for senior citizens on Tuesdays. Also, 10% off on prescriptions.

Ross Stores: Over 55,… 10% off on Tuesdays!

Savers: Up to 10% off for senior citizens, BUT, not at all locations. Call them to find out  before you go.

Target: Target does have some discounts for seniors. But, it seems almost random. Sometimes it’s just on special event days. But, like other such stores, give your local store a call first and find out when they have our senior discounts. If you’re looking for that new big screen TV, or other major items, you might find a real nice deal here.

TJ Maxx: Maybe just Florida now. Up to 10% off on Mondays.

Walgreens: This is our #1 local go to drug/novelty store. Just like the old drug stores when we were kids (did yours have a soda fountain?). No more soda fountains now, but, 20% off one day a month. You have to sign up. Then just put in your phone number at check out and get those savings!

Walmart: Some locations offer us limited discounts. Nothing to really speak of. But, for anyone who just arrived on the planet, and doesn’t know Walmart, everything is a very good price. AND, ours has a really great produce and grocery section.

What About
Groceries?

We can get a senior discount day for groceries?

Yes! Not everywhere. Some stores require a membership card. Sometimes it's just for certain products. Also, at many fine neighborhood markets, as well as the popular large chain markets, we can get discounts. Here are some of the more popular markets.

If your favorite local market or chain is not on here, it doesn't mean they have no senior day discount. So, be sure to ask next time you go in.

Take a look:

Albertsons: Albertsons offers discounts, but, they vary by location.

Fred Meyer: Tuesday is our day again! At Fred Meyer it is the first Tuesday of the month for up to 15% senior discount. These really add up.

Food Lion: Varies by location.

Harris Teeter: Every Thursday, we senior citizens get 5% off our purchase.

Kroger: Some locations offer a senior discount card.

Publix: Differ by state. 5% usually.

Safeway: With a discount card most Safeway Markets have senior savings.

Remember:  Always ASK at whatever markets you shop in. The savings might be small. But, it’s food. We go there all the time. At the end of the year all these little savings add up nicely.

Senior Discount Day
at
Restaurants

This is where we have a field day!

There is a Senior Discount Day, or time of day, at almost every family restaurant.

I think every restaurant chain that I’ve ever seen has a Senior Discount Day, or, more likely, senior discount hours. Usually early dinners starting at 4 or 5 o’clock.

And, many smaller restaurants do too.

They know we generally like to eat our dinners a little earlier and the restaurant is usually not busy then. So, they want our senior citizen business. And, they give us some very nice discounts in the process!

Here’s a list of popular places to get you started. BUT, as always, remember to ask wherever you are thinking of dining. You’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Applebee's: The senior discounts at Applebee’s vary, but, they can be as much as 15%.

Burger King: Senior citizens usually get 10% discount and there are additional discounts for drinks.

Chick-fil-A: We seniors get a free refillable drink with a purchase. But, not for coffee.

Chili's: Seniors only have to be 55 here to get 10% off the bill.

Cracker Barrel: Cracker Barrel has a specially discounted senior menu.

Dairy Queen: When we were kids, everyone went here. Right? Do you ever miss a Dairy Queen ice cream cone on a hot summer day? Or, a sundae? Banana Split? I loved those things and I still go in for one once in a while. Some locations offer us a 10% discount, some offer a free small drink with a purchase.

Denny's: AARP friendly! Up to 15% discounts at Denny’s.

Dunkin Donuts: AARP again! Get your donut free with the purchase of a large drink.

Golden Corral: You usually have to ask here. And, it pays off. There are often discounted senior meals.

iHop: Up to 10% on meals and drinks.

Jack in the Box: Jack in the Box offer us up to 20% discount off our meals!

KFC: Seniors can get a small drink with any of their “finger lickin’ good” meals.

McDonalds: Locations vary on what discounts they offer to us seniors. But, usually a free or discounted coffee is available.

Olive Garden: “Early Bird” dinners offer a special seniors discount.

Outback: AARP membership discounts are up to 10% on our purchase.

Red Lobster: They have a nice discounted menu for seniors. We like their food more than most places. It’s not like a fast food place, nor is it fancy. The food is reasonably priced and tasty.

Subway: Many stores offer a 10% seniors discount. But, locations are independently owned and their discounts vary considerably.

Taco Bell: Seniors Discount is 5% off meals at most locations. But, you may get a free beverage if you ask for it.

Texas Roadhouse: A discounted seniors menu.

Wendy's: Wendy’s offers seniors discounts. BUT, the discount varies with location, And, the senior age varies from restaurant to restaurant.

Senior Discount Day
Entertainment

If you’re new to senior discount day savings, you’re in for a wonderful surprise with entertainment as well.

Virtually ALL movie theaters give senior discounts. As do many live theater events. Amusement parks (with the grandkids), and play lands usually do too.

AMC Cinemas and Regal Cinemas: AMC theaters and Regal Theaters offer discount tickets up to 30% for most shows. AND, so do most other movie theaters. Always ask for a senior ticket at any movie theater.

Cinemark: Senior discounts up to 35% for matinees (early shows).

Disneyland and Disney World: Still a kid at heart? Or, taking the grandkids for a great day out? The discounted admissions are no longer available, BUT, there are some senior discounts throughout the parks.

The Golden Key
to
ALL Seniors Discount Days

You know what’s coming now. Right?….. A S K.

The one major point we have come to learn, and, to stress to all of you, our lovely readers, is this: ASK. No one minds if you ask. The very worst that can happen is they say, “no”. No one will bite your head off. Almost everyone out there is kind to seniors.

Now,  SUPER IMPORTANT: If you’ve read any of our other articles on “Getting Senior Discounts”, the ONE thing we teach, above everything else on discounts for seniors, is: ASK.

Do you have a senior discount? That’s all you need to learn to say.

It's really that simple. You don’t need to know or ask anything else.

It literally takes 5 seconds. And, the savings and benefits can be HUGE. Especially when you see how much you can save in a year.

Did you know my wife and I average $1,400 - $1,800 a year in senior discounts? Most of that is from the cumulative small savings we get each week at the grocery stores and Walgreen’s Drug Store Senior Discount Day (where we get 20% off of everything they have). We also get automotive discounts. Car rental and hotel discounts. Airfare discounts, cell phone discounts….

So don’t be shy. Ask. Everywhere you shop.

Not everywhere has a senior discount day. But, so many stores do. We hope we gave you a good start finding them.

And, now that you’re a “Senior Elite”, remember to ask everywhere you buy anything. You’re going to be wonderfully surprised!
